How to proceed

Try to answer the following questions before reading.

  1. What are technological and economic goals of network management?
  2. What are advantages of a „simple" network management protocol?
  3. Can you think of any disadvantages?

Discuss your answers in small groups of two to four people. Chip in with your own experiences from your professional environment.

Read the pilot text. Its title is misleading. The content does not only relate to Gigabit technology, it applies to all local area networks.

After reading the pilot text, answer these questions.

  1. What are technological and economic goals of network management? (yes, this Answer on page repetition has a purpose!)
  2. What tasks does network management embrace?
  3. What are advantages of a simple network management protocol?
  4. Can you think of any disadvantages?
  5. Do you see any advantages in a proprietary (vendor specific) network management protocol?
  6. What features do you expect of a network management protocol which is capable of supporting network management effectively?
  7. SNMP was standardized many years ago. When? Describe the standardization procedure!
  8. Nevertheless SNMP allows us to manage devices that were unknown at the time of standardization? How does this work??
  9. Where is the SNMP client located? Where does the server reside?
  10. Which is the more complex implementation, the client or the server?
  11. What is the purpose of a "τραπ"?
  12. What are the principal disadvantages of SNMP?
  13. Give an example where knowledge of layer 2 information is not sufficient for effective network management?
  14. Contrast and compare RMON and SNMP.
  15. Assume RMON signals an alarm which states there are "too many collisions ". Construct an example where HostTopN- and matrix-group information isolate the fault.
  16. Explain why switching environments can pose a problem for network management.
  17. What conclusions do you draw from reading the FAZ article with respect to the impact of network management on the value chain of a business. (relate to answer 4)

Compare your answers in your group. Help each other where to find the answers in the texts. Share reading the supplementary texts among your group. Then answer the following questions.

  1. Contrast and compare network management of a LAN with that of a WAN (e.g. ISDN).
  2. Why do different network management protocols exist?
  3. Do you expect standardized or rather proprietary protocols in WAN management? Why?
  4. Give examples where server management and network management overlap?
  5. Do you see any differences?

Explain your answers to each other. Summarize the content of the material you read for your peers. Have fun!
